It is Forbidden to Think Impure Thoughts

  • It is forbidden to think impure thoughts.
  • This includes...
    • One who purposely brings himself to have impure thoughts.
    • Doing actions that will unavoidably cause him to have impure thoughts, such as watching movies, reading magazines and looking at women.
    • When impure thoughts enter ones head against his will and instead of removing them he continues to fantasize.
  • Sometimes a person who has not yet fixed all his previous actions finds himself being bombarded with impure thoughts, although he tries his hardest to guard his mind. Such a person should not worry and realize that this is part of the Teshuvah process and is unavoidable, he should simply try his hardest to remove them from his head.
  • The prohibition of thinking impure thoughts is from the Torah and is considered an Isur D'oraysa. This is agreed upon by all the Poskim: Ramban, Rabeinu Yonah, Sefer Charaydim, Shulchan Aruch, Rambam, S’mak…..
  • By thinking impure thoughts a person transgresses the commandment of “You shall not stray after you heart and after your eyes” and “You shall refrain from all bad.
  • The above transgressions apply to having the thought itself, even if the person has no intention of carrying out an actual physical sin.
  • The transgression applies not only to thinking about married women but even if one thinks about unmarried women.
  • In addition to the above, a person also transgresses the Torah commandments of “You shall make yourself holy and you will become holy” as well as “You shall be holy.”
  • According to the Zohar the following transgressions can be added as well: “You shall fear my holy places ”, “Foreign Gods you shall not create for yourselves ” and “Do not turn to idolatry.”
  • When one has impure thoughts, the thoughts themselves create Klipot even though there are no physical actions.
  • The Klipot created from impure thoughts are very refined. Unlike Klipot created from physical sins these Klipot can dress themselves up in a persons thought process. These cause a person to have many foreign thoughts while he is praying and studying. Thoughts of emptiness and stupidities as well as thoughts of haughtiness.
  • Even the sages who were as holy as angels, were petrified of having impure thoughts and did everything to prevent them. How much more so do we, who are much lower than than them, have to be precautious.
  • A person should be especially careful to avoid impure thoughts while going to sleep.
  • The main part of Teshuvah is to purify the mind and to prevent all impure thoughts.
